In camp in the Tchercher Mountains, 1925 January 27. To agent James B. Pond. Some place names underlined in red pcncil. In full: "My Abyssinian Venture is going excellently. As I hoped the cinematographer & I have arrived at the psychological moment when Ras Tafari, having visited Europe, is anxious for publicity & desirous of showing his country at its best. He sent us a warm message of welcome to Harrar & a promise to facilitate our journey in every possible way, so our 1800 mile route has now been decided. We left Dire Dawa on Jan. 16 & 2 days across mountains took us to Harrar, a medieval walled town where we saw the great ceremony of Epiphany - the blessing of the water (a mountain pool) by priests in the most gorgeous vestments under gold, purple & red velvet umbrellas & the rush of thousands of men, all in white, rifles or spears on their backs, to throw themselves into the holy water. There the procession of the Arks containing copies of the Tablets of Moses, with indescribably magnificent entourage. There the dance of the Priests before the Ark, as David danced before Ark of Covenant. We are now on our way through wild mountain country, by lake, forest & river to Aukober & the capital, Addis Abeba. We have a caravan of 12 baggage mules, 4 saddle ones & 2 special mules, the gift of the Harrar Governor, with silver harness & trappings of purple velvet embroidered in every colour. We have 6 muleteers, & a headman who wears a curved sword & is swathed in cartridge belts, 2 servants & a guide, 10 soldiers armed with rifles, & a provincial official, an honor done us by the Governor. This man, Ballambarassi Gabra Selessi, has 3 servants, 4 mules, & a female slave, so you see it's a fairly big caravan. We have seen most interesting... For more information contact HistoryForSale.
