JOAN MIRÓ 10x11¼ signed b/w book photograph of artist Joan Miró examining a print of his work with the printer. Framed to 11¾x13 in a black matte frame. Book photograph signed "Miró". B/w, 10x11¼ photo (visible) with 9¼x9 image in 11¾x13 black matte frame. Photo is under glass. Miró (1893-1983) was a Spanish Catalan painter and perhaps the greatest of all Surrealist painters. Miró was known for his use of bright colors and hallucinatory figures to create a poetic vision of the subconscious and influenced future abstract expressionists. An introverted man even at the height of his fame, he started painting professionally in 1915, experimenting with the Impressionistic style of Fauvism, which used brilliant swaths of color. But, from 1925 to 1928, under the influence of the Dadaists and Paul Klee, he began to paint "dream pictures" and "imaginary landscapes" in an attempt to portray the working of the unconscious mind. He became so respected in the Surrealist movement that André Breton reportedly said that he was "the most Surrealist of us all". He became more experimental in the 1930's and began creating sculptures and tapestries, and he became politically active during the Civil War in his native Spain. Miró gained international fame after World War II and executed large murals and sculptures for hotels, cities and the UNESCO building in Paris. Not framed in Gallery of History style.
